I need to replace the shift lever on my 1982 Johnson 8 hp outboard motor. I don't see how to remove it. I think there is a metal cap with a couple gears under it as I see in the parts breakdown. I don't know how to gain acess to that area. Can I replace the shift handle without removing the powerhead? Please help.

Please stick to one post on the same subject as it's less confusing.

1984 is the first year for the 8 hp model.------------Might have to remove the carburetor to get that cover off.

Ok I got it. Removed carb was able to sneak a 3/8 wrench in there and got the cover off. Removed the screw holding the shift handle in and swapped handles. Thanks for your time fellas.
