Can anyone help me with a shift problem on my 1965 Evinrude 33hp ski twin ?

If it jumps out of forward gear, reverse is fine. If I adjust linkage so it doesn't jump out of forward then it won't shift into reverse (just grinds away )

Does this sound like a linkage problem or an internal gear worn problem ?

If she stays in at a low idle and starts jumping in and out at higher rpm's, it's a good bet that the lobes on the clutch dog and/or the forward gear have worn over and won't hold in.

Have you tried shifting manually at the engine to see if it will stay in gear?

Thanks OBJ

If it is a worn gear is this something I could attempt to fix myself ? The motor is in my garage now for the winter and I am reluctant to spend too many $ at the marina because of its advanced age

Jack

It's not a worm gear but a pinion gear running between the forward and reverse gears. I believe they are still available new, but at a price. I believe the best bet would be to look around for used parts like on ebay or check the local marinas for used parts. The repair work in itself is not difficult and a manual would be a good idea if you intend on keep the engine.
