Shift linkage question

I have a '94 Cajun with 120 Johnson. Saturday at the lake I noticed that after putting it in nuetral....the prop. was still turning and slowly moving the boat along. I hit reverse and then put back in nuetral and that seemed to work so I thought it had just got "stuck". It did it again later so I hit reverse but then reverse was actually forward....and still no nuetral. I loaded it up and took it home to check it out. There was a hose the seemed to possible interfering with the linkage so i moved it and hoped the problem would be fixed. I seem to have nuetral and foward but now no reverse at all....it just will not engage. I am confused because up until now all has worked well. I am not sure it the problem is in the shifth unit at the console or with the linkage at the motor. Any thoughts/experiences/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you are trying to discern if it is a problem in the console, or the linkage at the motor, then simply disconnect it and try them seperately.

At the risk of sounding dumb.....disconnect what/from where?

Go back on the mtr and disconnect the shift cable from the mtr linkage. Then try shifting the mtr at the mtr linkage and see what happens. Then shift the control box and watch the shift cable back at the mtr.

I am new to this site and don't mean to but in on this thread but, can anyone help me with what I think is the nuetral switch it is below the arm that the bottom cable is. what I need to find out is what do I do with the tie stap that came with it.

Start a new thread, be specific about what engine you have, and include some photos if at all possible. I'm sure someone who has experience with your particular engine will be able to help.
