On an '87 70 hp Johnson can anyone tell me how to disconnect the shift linkage so I can drop the lower unit?? I'm waiting on my manuals to get here in the mail and can't stand sitting around waiting.

Thanks!
Scott

Re: shift linkage

Another question on this subject:

Can the water pump be working at low speed but fail at high speed??

I've idled and ran it easy for hours at a time with no alarm, but run it 3/4 throttle for 20 minutes or so and the alarm sounds. Let it sit, I assume cool down and it runs fine again.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Change the impeller. If it is worn a little it will not move enough water to cool you at high speeds.

As for your other question I don't know. On my smaller (10 to 35hp) there is an inspection plate with two screws holding it on. Remove that and you will find two rods going into a brass clip with two bolts on it. Loosen the top bolt and the top rod should come out. This is what puts you in fwd/rev/neu from you shifter.

Re: shift linkage

Scott, do you use the motor in saltwater or is there a chance you have sucked up some mud or silt into the cooling system? Do you run w/ a fresh water flush after every saltwater run?v Any junk or deposits in the cooling system can cause high speed overheating, but have enough capacity at low rpm to run at normal temperature. If you opt to replace the water pump & impeller, you may want to make certain the water paths are clear using air or water into the water tube.
Jim
