92/120hp force, was putting up for winter and was changing lower gear lube and wasn't paying attention and took this out, now it won't just go simply in, how can I get it in, I have a manual and it doesn't say anything about this, any help.
OB, thanks, I got it back in by doing just that, but I want to make sure, When I put it in forward or reverse the prop turns left and right about 1/3, 1/4 turn and it locks is that normal, just don't want to start it up and put it in gear and make a 1500 dollar mistake, after my son moved the shift foward it went in easy but just double checking,
91Formula, It is common to feel what seems to be excessive backlash in lower unit while turning prop by hand in gear.My unit lashes around 2 1/2 inches radially at prop barrel. Not sure what is normal for yours but I'll bet your fine.Turn prop while shifting into forward and reverse and rotate flywheel by hand(direction of rotation) and observe prop.
I think you have removed the shift cradle screw,
not good, you might be able to reinstall screw with a whole lot of luck and help, you need someone to be in the boat to shift it slowly while you use an icepick, small center punch etc... to see if you can manipulate the shift cradle screw hole in to position,It's going to be a pain but work at it ,if all else fails you are going to have it torn down
OB,

I'm gonna try and do as you told me about putting it in gear and turning the flywheel, I did as you stated and it went in really easy, could have it went in wrong or anything, I mean if it went easy could it went in wrong or what
OB,

Did exactly as you stated and the prop does turn clockwise in forward, counter clockwise for reverse, looks like I got lucky, things that happen when the kids are bugging you, thanks again,

Jim
The same thing happen to us. The screw was removed by mistake. We thought that we had it back in the right place, everything seemed to turn ok, but quess what we took out and ran good for 15 min. and then all hell broke loose. The shift yoke fell when the screw was removed. Had to replace foward and pinnon gear. Thank goodness we did the work ourselves and found parts at great price($600.00 for all). If you are not completely, totally sure it is back in the right place, I suggest be on safe side and take apart lower unit and make sure. If hubby and I can do it anyone can.
Joker,

After you thought you got the pin in did you put it in forward and reverse and turn the fly wheel and watch the prop, I did that and it seemed to work,
yes, we did. We took boat out on the lake and road around for 15+ min then we heard a loud noise in the lower unit then it started to clank. Took out of water and turned prop and you can hear it clank. We drained lower unit and had metal shaving and chunks. I just wanted to cry. We took lower unit off from the motor and when we shook the lower unit we could hear the shift yoke moving around. Took apart lower unit and saw all the damage. I at first just wanted to die, because we are 1st time boat owners and had limited funds to fix. We bought the manual and proceeded to repair, took us a couple of days to locate the parts and a day to put all back together. Now it runs like the day we bought it.
You would have to be extremely lucky to get the pin back into the shifter mech. You should probably get a manual and take it apart. Get new seals and put it back together. You should be able to do it in 3 or 4 hours, and you'll know it is right.
I've done that before, and had no problem once I got the screw put back together.

You should be able to tell whether that screw actually goes together, and the shifter mechanism goes from forward to neutral to reverse and back properly. If it does, it has to be correct. You should be able to tell if it works freely or not, and if it does, it should be ok.

I am sure that if somehow that screw went back in improperly, there were clues to that fact prior to the lower unit disintegrating.
OK, lets try this again, at first the pin wouldn't go in and I didn't force it, after OB helped me out with putting the shift lever in forward it went in pretty easy, only took about 2 minutes, went real slow with it, I guess I'm wondering if I could have missed the whole shift coupler. I have a manual and sitting here looking at it, just curious if I shifted the forward lever to far could I've went to far past it. I put it in foward and reverse and tuned the engine over by hand and watched the prop, prop seemed to move in the right direction on both,
I must have gotten real lucky too. '95 70hp Force.

Out of pure ignorance I took this screw out during my pre purchase inspection of the l/u oil.
Put it back in and never thought about it.
This was after I ran it for about an hour, and was taking it to a dealer for a once over. They ran it in a tank and checked out stator, etc. I bought it, took it home, ordered a manual, then ran it about 10 hours before I got the manual.
Was I ever sick feeling when I read the manual.

But it has been fine for 6 years now. Whew.
91formula If you don't use your boat alot in the winter months I would take apart just to be on the safe side, but that is me. If you take it all apart you can inspect all your gears and your clutch dog. You can also check for wear on your shift yoke and change out your gaskets and seals. After our mistake on the pivot screw we had to replaced the foward and pinnon gear. But after getting in the lower unit and making sure every thing is how it should be, I felt alot more at ease when going out on the water. I know that I have no worn parts(at this time) and that every thing is how it should be.
Well after a couple of months off, (Cold Weather), I took the boat in to the repair shop, owner dropped the L/U and told me that I got it back in, when I picked it up we started the engine and put in gear forward/reverse put it back up, took it out today for a ride, ran for about 1 hour almost no problems, back and forth in forward/reverse, seems like I did get lucky, I also had my prop rebuilt, all this for 77 dollars. Thanks OB!
