Shift plate assy question

Hey Folks,

4.3L Mercruiser. Engine serial number is wore off of the sticker (is there another location?). Drive serial: 0L478230 (2000 Maxum 1800 SR)

i am unsure of the name of the piece I am referring to, but when I shift into reverse, the black barrel part of the shift plate assy comes apart and are not connected. I will attach a pic for reference. The post slides out of the tube (best way i can describe it).

Boat still shifts into reverse and drive and seems to perform correctly.

So, I would like to know the correct name for the part I am referring to and would also like to know if the shift plate assy is broken or if my cable needs an adjustment.

Thanks in advance!

The black plastic tube shown is your shift assist spring assy. It is a push-pull spring that loads up in both FWD and REV, and then helps you snap back into neutral. If it comes apart it is defective and should be replaced for your shift cut-out system to work correctly.

It is retained in the location shown with a headed pin that also goes thru the console shift cable. The pin is held in place with a cotter pin. I haven't quite envisioned your complaint, but if this thing simply comes off the pin, replace the cotter pin and it will stay put. If you can pull it apart, or it comes apart, replace it. The shift console/controller cable eye tucks into the cavity behind the shift assist, and the headed pin holds them in place.

The middle/lower stud on the lever attaches your transom/drive cable. The stud should be in the bottom of the slot, which it seems to be. The drive shift cable eye slips over the outside end of the stud, and yours appears to be retained with a cotter pin.

Put it back together and test shift in the water. From your description, it doesn't sound like you will need to change any adjustments. If you have shifting problems, continue this thread, and you will get the adjustment help you need.

Harringtondav,

Thanks for the reply! I should have noted that the picture i attached was one I found online and not mine.

Your first paragraph answered my question. The tube just pulls apart and both the post and sleeve (still attached at either end), just drop in the middle.

I will begin my search for the part. I assume I can purchase just the shift assist spring assy (just the tube) by itself?

Again, I appreciate your response and in depth description. I still need to read it seven more times so it all sinks in lol
