Trying to remove lower unit, but cannot find out how to unhook shift rod! shift lever comes in from the side (outside of the motor and houseings, below the motor base and into the exhaust and drive shaft houseing). lower unit is unbolted and drops down 1 inch. only thing left is the shift rod! I have done several that hook up under the power head, but this one does not! HELP!!!!

No model number given to confirm year...

But if it is an early generation 35 (1979 & prior), it'll have a small oval cover on the side of the leg, held on with two screws. There's a coupling behind that cover, remove the bottom bolt. Do NOT remove the bolt while the lower unit is hanging by the shift rod - snug it back up with one bolt. Otherwise you'll strip the threads off coupling bolt as you remove it.

If it is a later generation 35 (1980 or newer), it'll have a double-nutted affair in the lower unit, behind the plastic intake grate on the side of the gearfoot, just above the bullet. If you don't have a plastic intake grate, you don't have this style unit.
