shift rod bushing removal

I have a 1994 25 horse Evinrude, and was wondering what is the best way to remove the bushing o-ring and washer for the lower shift rod. Do I need any special tools for removal and installation.I'm resealin the lower unit and noticed some slop where the shift rod enters the lwr unit.Seems to be brass on the visible part. Any help would be great

Which engine do you have, the standard, or commercial? The standard is a one piece gearcase with thru-hub exhaust, the commercial is a two piece case. Bushing removal is different on these case's.

I have the standarnd its one piece evinrude blue shift rod access thru the plastic windows

You need a threaded rod that will pass thru the bushing, with a threaded nut on the bottom end. The part no. for this tool is 327693. The bushing has to be pulled from the bottom, up. You need a driver to to put the bushing back, the part no. is 304515. The service manual will show these part's, and tool's in detail. Without the proper tool, there is a risk of damageing the gearcase casting. The bore size of the bushing is slightly over .250, If you try to use 1/4-20 all-thread rod, the 1/4-20 nut will score, or not pass thru the bushing bore in the gearcase casting. plus! the bottom nut has to be kept from turning while pulling on the top nut with backing plate in place. You will want a manual here, that casting will chew up about a $1000 at new price

Is this the same procedure for my Evin 40952R? I was planning to machine a drift the same size as the casting bore and drive it out. Is this acceptable?

In response to my question above, I did it. The brass bushing punched out nicely. What is to prevent me from using a stepped drift to drive it back in? I have no idea what those tool numbers cited above look like.

byacey: I take it you are talking about the two piece gearcase where you can drive out the bushing from the underside, if so! you can make a punch as you discribe. Make it with a guide the diameter of the shift rod so you don't peen the hole over.

That's exactly what I have done. Any idea what the bushing ID is supposed to be? The rod measures .248,<br />and the bushing ID measures .254, should the bushing be tighter than that?

.254 is the correct diameter. I know that seem's loose, but that is the way they are made so they don't bind. The o-ring does the sealing. The tool you made would be the same as the special tool you would buy for your gearcase.

Ok, Thanks for the clarification. In The OMC published service manual, do they give concise methods of doing these type of service tasks? I would still like to get a proper manual for this model, but the aftermarket manuals usually leave a lot to be desired.

The OMC is by far the best manual. It will give step, by step instruction's on every part of that engine, along with any tool needed. The photo's are excellent, and are a big aid in themselves. The manual also cover's that engine, and that year only, this alone save's alot of confusion.
