shift rod disconnection for l.u. removal

1979 merc 1750 (175hp) black max. Sn#5080.....<br /><br />There are five bolts to remove. I can't visualize the disconnecting of the shift rod so I can drop the lower unit to change an impellor.<br /><br />can someone help a dummie?

There is nothing to disconnect, the upper part of the shaft fits into the lower part of the shaft. They simply slide together or apart whatever the case may be. Watch that the tube goes into the top of the water pump as you are reassembling.
