Shift rod length adjustment 90 hp

What is the correct length for the shift rod on a 1989 90 hp? I have been asked to help a buddy who messed with the length while trying to get it to align after replacing a water pump. The engine won’t reverse now and all visible linkage is moving correctly. So I think he may have twisted the rod a bit to get it to line up. I may be off a year on this, is there a big difference in the length year over year?<br />Mac

Measuring from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift bolt hole:<br /><br />90 thru 115hp = (L) 21-27/32" - - (XL) 26-27/32" plus/minus 1/32" Have shift rod in neutral.

You can also eyeball it if you don't want to drop the lower unit again after carefully prepping and torquing the bolts!<br /><br />With the shifter in neutral and gearbox in neutral, rotate the shaft so it slides perfectly into the shift linkage. Takes small fingers and a bit of patience, but this worked for me.

It's best to obtain the accurate measurement. Two turns out of alignment will still have the shift rod engaging the linkage, but the lobes on the shifter dog and gear will not engage properly.
