Ok - setting the proper shift rod height tonight and hopefully getting that LU on and functioning again.

I had a terrible time getting it on before (probably because the height was wrong - but anyway)

So on my 50573B how is the rod supposed to be oriented to get into the shift rod lever? Towards the Engine, or towards to boat?

I don't have my manual in front of me, but i believe it says "to the front" well to the front of the LU? or front of the boat?

Parts diagram shows crooked part of shift rod towards starboard.

For shift rod height, check the top secret files.

Depends. I think the part of the LU that faces the boat is the back of the LU and the prop side the front. But if the rod is turned so the hole faces the back of the LU it's not going to fit in the slot.

I'll start with it towards starboard and turn if necessary. It was just such a PITA to get it in last time only to realize i jacked up the shift rod height i want this to go smooth.

Thanks Mohawk.

WHAT?... What in the hell is wrong with you? According to you... if you stood alongside the engine, and was facing the boat, your backside would be facing front? Were you born stupid or did you take lessons? Red Foreman would have a field day with you!

1975 - 1978 - 50, 55, 60hp Electric Start = (S) 15-29/32" - - (L) 20-29/32" plus/minus 1/32" Have shift rod in neutral.

I was born stupid you schmuck. Maybe you should calm the Eff down and realize this site like other forums is to help people who have questions and may not be experienced as you in repairing them.

Same to you Racerone - What the hell is wrong with you guys?

I'm trying to repair an engine (for the first time going this in-depth with the repairs) but you have to start somewhere.

Are here you guys are acting like asses instead of helping someone who's looking for it.

Screw both of you.

Good luck-----Shops in most areas are $100+/ hr ----It adds up in a hurry.------Only once since 1968 has someone offered me a small sum of coins when I patiently answered questions and did some coaching.------Internet hounds sometimes seem a thankless lot.

I have a repair manual and the internet to utilize. And worst case there’s always the old trial and error method.

You help people on here all the time. Condescending at times. And not at others. I get what you were saying when you said “I tried to help” you were saying I was over thinking it and the answer is that simple. Got it.

But come on man - there’s not a complete need to go full jerk right? You had similar style of responses in other posts as well. So where I see a whole thread now dedicated to “racer one is going to kill me” should say something.

we we all appreciate your help. And I’ve read your posts in the past that answered my questions without having to post it. But tone it back man. Do you want a prize for being the smartest guy on the board? Do you really need the praise? If you don’t want to help, then don’t. But this is a free site. Want to get paid for your help? Start your own site. Or feel free to charge $100+ an hour to fix peoples boats for them.
