Re: shift rod posistion

Not only is the position of the offset critical, the measurement of the shift rod is also critical as follows. Any deviation will result is improper shifting.

1983 - 1985 - 40, 50, 60hp = (S) 15-29/32" - - (L) 20-29/32" plus/minus 1/32" Have the shift rod in neutral and offset to the rear.

With the l/u off can you get it to shift in f-n-r ? If you can then follow Joe's specs above and measure from the center of the hole to the g/c hsg.

Re: shift rod posistion

i did all the measuring as directed but every time i put the lower unit up it kicked the shift rod down and it went in gear wouldn't stay in neutral so i set the shift rod again but i pulled the shift rod lever off then put the control in fwd reinstalled the shift rod and lowered it to neutral without moving the rod tightened it up and it was in nature like it was supposed to be with everything in place .that was the hardest part of the whole job.
