If it is Quick stab type remove cotter pin from easier to get to linkage arm and its pin .Arm can then be pulled back disengaging shift rod.Probably easier to see shift rod after intake boxes are removed.I had to pull starter on mine so i could easily see to re-align on reassembly. That and a few choice words should get it.Better design if it is quick release,Yet still hard to get to.If it is not quick connect type you'll have to remove small pin bolt from shift rod end.

I've done some V6's where I eneded up pulling the bottom carb. Sometimes its just hard as heck to hook back up.

I've got an 85 Evinrude 120hp and there's a screw at the top of the shift rod, not a cotter pin. So a swivel socket on a long extension with a magnetic insert is the tool I use. And a coathanger makes a good tool for aligning the holes back up. Good luck! Oh yeah, dont let anyone near the shift rod while it's apart, if someone turns it a few times, you'll need to find out how to reset the height on it. That's how I found this forum! :D :D :D
