Shift rod seal replacment

I have a 1964 28 hp evinrude can some one tell me the best way to remove the brass bushing that holds the o ring in ? do you have to replace that bushing or can you take it out and reuse it and how to you get it out with out damage???

3 ways.-----Replace the o-ring without pulling the bushing.------Run a 5/16-NC tap in for 3 threads and use threaded rod to pull it out.-----Use the factory tool.( visit your local shop ) and drive it out in seconds.

Dental picks work just fine for removing just the o-ring.

thank you racerone and boobie i did not know you could just replace the o ring .. How do you go about installing the new one seems very tight and not to much room down that small hole... and what do you all thing of them seal removers they sell at HF do they work good for the housing seal ?? any videos out there on this ?
