I am working on resealing my lower unit on a 64 johnson 9.5 I have read a few posts about the shift rod bushing and seal. Most said to use a tapered punch to remove the bushing. Do you come up from underneath and punch it out. How does this work exactly. Is there any other way besides a punch. Could I thread a thick bolt into it and pull it out. Thanks in advance

punch.JPGAttached is a pic of the tool. Not sure on your motor whether you punch it out from the top or bottom - it varies by motor. You can pull it by threading a bolt in, but it ruins the bushing. The punch doesn't ruin it.

I would contact F_R and purchase one of his shift rod seal removal tools. It is money well spent

Re: Shift rod seal

I finally got it. For everyone in the future I was able to use a spade bit for a drill and put the connecting end of the bit against the bushing and hammer it out.
