I have a 91 V4 115 and wow this looks fairly easy. One question. Do you have to remove the carbs from the Manifold or can it come off as one unit? Looks tougher if I have to take the carbs off the Manifold.

I took my carbs off. They needed a rebuild anyway. There are manifold bolts under the bottom carb that may be tough to re-torque if the carbs are still on. good luck

I just started on it. Did you take the starter off too or not? It looks like it's going to be in the way if I don't.

I removed the following: carbs, throttle linkage, shift linkage, starter, all electric components, crankcase vent lines, oil injection lines ( label them ), fuel pump, fuel lines, shift rod bracket, intake. Lay intake carb side down with reeds up and cover with clean cloth. Drop lower unit. Take a "big" screw driver and place it behind shift rod bracket and hold it away from crankcase while pulling it up. WARNING do not scrape against the surface where the gasket goes between manifold and crankcase. I will give info on shift shaft reinstall when all this is done.

Well, I got the shift rod out. I am so glad I didn't do the Epoxy thing (JB Weld) thing I saw somewhere else on the net. That rod was bad at the top too. How easy is it to get the new one in since it's more solid than the old one was and won't bend as easy? The old one I ended up bending in the weak spots without much pressure.

It will be the easiest thing you ever slipped into anything !!!!! Take the snap ring off the bottom of the bracket, notice how the ball fits into the "dents" in the shift rod and take apart. You will have 2 nylon washers ,a split bushing, a spring and a ball ( BB ). Clean this stuff put in a zip lock bag with the grommet till you get your parts. Re assemble with the split in the bushing lined up with the grease fitting and the spring in the bracket with the ball in place.

Well, I went to the parts shop the other day. Figured I'd replace all the gaskets along the way as well. Arrrrgggg....He only had a few in-stock so I have to wait while the rest (include the new SS shift shaft) come in. I'll let ya know how things go once I get the parts.

I got it back together and it runs great on the muffs. Test run tomorrow. Only thing I did that I can not figure out yet is the electric choke isn't working now. I must have hooked it up wrong or something.

So, for those of you who want to avoid taking the powerhead off and saving LOTS OF TIME, money and headaches. This method WORKS! (Note: I have never done a major job on an outboard in my life before this!)

Glad to hear it worked out for ya. There?s lots of tricks out there and its always best to do a search first before trying a repair to see if there?s an easer way.
Check your grounds for your choke problems. Good luck.

Yeah. My partner in the work didn't hook up the ground.

Now that it's been sitting so long, the throttle isn't right. Dies or takes a long time to kick into high. I think it's a stuck throttle but that's for another topic!

I think I have the same issue but on a 1999 F100TLR 4 stroke. I took off the carbs & intake manifold, & it does not look like I can get the shift rod up & out like parrfive said. I am assuming that I need to remove the PH. Is it still a pain to do this on this year & model? Also it looks like the circlip at the bottom of the steering tube rusted away,(i found the pieces in the top of lower leg next to water pump), am i correct in assuming I need to change the bushings that are in the steering tube ? Any help appreciated.

I had 4 different people try to fix my problem all to no avale, I brought it to Auqa marine in Lady Lake, Fl. they used to mech. in the key's, they drilled the bolts so they'd break and pulled the power head. Than they tapped the bolts out.
I don't know all the in's and out's of the job, I paid them. They charged me $1000.00 and I was out in about 10 days. Seeing a motor was $10,000.00 I thought it was a steal. That motor was great after that.
Sorry not much help, I'm a fisherman not a heavy mech., I just do the little stuff. Sorry.

Well my 86 115 shift shaft finally broke. I am going to attempt to replace using parrfives method.
Carbs and manifold not powerhead. Wish me luck.

So far so good Shift Shaft out in 2 Hours going slow. Now I need parts and reassemble.
I'll keep ya posted.

Maybe some one will do a sticky showing all needed for doing it that way for the 4 cyl motors

Where is this shift rod located? Is it something I can see if there are issues?.... I am looking at a 25' Grady white with twin 200 yamahas 1991.... I dont want to end up in a boat which will have major problems, but also dont want to write the boat off...
