hey guys my 1986 bayliner capri is in the shop due to a broke shift rod. the problem is we have just found out that the rod is discontinued. my mechanic suggested that a welder just weld it back together... the question is do yall know where i could find one in stock or should i just have them weld it together. thanks

Re: shift rod

You guys love to keep me guessing. If it is the straight shift rod with the small hole through the top, in the lower unit, any Merc dealer should be able to get you one. See? Now I have to guess that your 125 is older than '92.

If the break is at or near the seal, then when the welded part passes through the seal, it will leak. New part is preferable in this case

If that's the case, simply unscrew the broken rod, with the lower unit removed and lying on it's side. ( not absolutely necessary but you are less likely to shift anything) Be careful not to move the square block inside the lower unit when you unscrew then pull it out. And be prepared for some oil to come out. Slide the new one in and screw it all the way down then back out just enough to line up the hole with the linkage pin.

Re: shift rod

You know, these dealer parts departments just don't like to research anything at all. Their first answer if it is an old engine is that the part is discontinued. Good bye! Don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out!

That part was used on ALL 3 and 4 cylinder Chrysler engines from 1979-80 through all Force 3 and 4 cylinder engines up to about 1990-92 (not sure the exact year Merc changed the lower unit) So, you see, it is a very common part. Contact franzmarine@aol.com or over at The Chrysler Crew. If he can't help you, try the message board there, and if that doesn't work, I have one that I am not using right now but I will need to replace it and I will want your first born male child, so send me a PM.
