what is the best way to get to and unhook the shift rod on a 1977 johnson 115

I believe on those you will find it, right below the carb.

Go to Shop.Evinrude.com and look up the parts diagram on it and you'll get a better idea. It's really pretty simple. Not to be a smart *** but as they say "one picture is worth a thousand words"

Diisconnect shift cable. Remove the 3/8" nut from the two shift levers. Remove the 3/4" shoulder bolt. Split the two shift levers and remove them from the barrel top portion of the shift rod.

Note..... make sure that the nylon bushing is in that shift barrel when reassembling. The unit will not shift properly without it.

Directly underneath the carbs, flat blade screwdriver or 10mm socket, i know i have had my lower unit off 5 times last year! :)
