The Johnson manual states that when reinstalling the lower unit after servicing the water pump to make sure the shift rod length is correct.

How does the length get too short or too long after removing the lower unit to service the water pump?

Any other tips on the subject of the water pump replacement would be appreciated.

Re: shift rod

If you unscrew it from its base. If you dont turn it you should be ok.

Re: shift rod

The shift rod is threaded into the gearcase and if it turns while removing or installing the gearcase, the length will be off.

Make sure the rod is set to the correct height in neutral as mentioned in the service manual, or the shifting linkage geometry will be incorrect and shifter damage could occur.
