Hello,

I have a 1998 alpha 1 gen 2 out drive serial #0L10648(I might be missing the last number). I need to replace the Upper Shift Shaft bushing and seals. In the image the bushing is on top of the two seals(under the arrow). Any Ideas about how to replace the bushing and seals.

Hello,

According to Manual 14 you remove the set screw and slide the shaft out. Once out there are bushings and seals to be replaced. The early model Gen II drives used special tool 91-806928T to remove and install seals and bushings. The later drives used special tool 91-805057A2

Go here and look up Merc manual 14 Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!

Just did that myself. You simply drive out the old bushings with an appropriately sized punch or drift, or socket - then drive the new ones in. Punch out the bottom bushing first, then the top. And reverse the order when installing. Pretty easy. the new style upper has improved seals, and is bigger than the original style. Here's the new install:

Thanks ALLDODGE,

I have the shaft out and read the manual but it is not clear on how to remove the bushing. Is it pressed out or pounded out from the top or bottom? Are the new bushing and seals pressed in or pounded in. Is it from the top or bottom?

Thanks Fishermark,

My bushings are different then yours (see Attached.) I think my out drive is a bit older, if you look at the picture I posted the brass bushing is inside the bell housing. Do you know if it is the same procedure to remove the bushing and seals.

You simply have the old style bushing. It is replaced with the new style. The removal and installation is the same.

For the most part you should be able to drive the bushing and seal out using a large enough drift punch or socket. I've used sockets many times and it does work. The manual says to use special tool 91-806928T for your older style. It is basically a bolt, washer, nut and sleeve (like a long socket or piece of pipe) used to push out or pull in the seal and bushing. I found one here which has a picture
