During my inspection of the upper shift shaft, I found that the arm on top is slightly loose. It can be moved side to side while holding the shaft, maybe an 1/8 at the tip of the arm. This probably isn't good I'm guessing. I see there's a screw pin that goes through it that when tighened, it does eliminate the movement. The pin is worn in the middle and probably creating this movement. Would this be the culprit in my not being able to go into reverse? I've looked online for the pin, but all they have is the shaft itself, no pin. Where would a guy find one of these?

Sorry for the blurry picture.

Any 'slop' in the shift system will cause problems with getting both gears successfully. The part number for the pin is 10-45590... Got to www.mercruiserparts.com and enter that number. They have a picture of it... The right one? I would also replace the arm and the shift shaft seal (with the new style)....

Thanks Chris. I appreciate the info. I figured the pin was out there. I just hadn't found it yet. A great site to keep for the future.

The wife and I were in your part of the world in 83. We spent time in Adelaid, Melbourne, Sydney, Townsville and up to Port Douglas and parts inbetween for a month. A great trip. Hope to return again some day.
