Hello,
I have been dealing with replacing an impeller on a 650 mercury 1967. When I took off the lower unit, the shift shaft stuck in the upper part of the motor, and poped out of the lower unit. I tried reinstalling it anyway after putting in the new impeller, but all I get is forward. The instructions I have say to turn the propeller counter clockwise while turning the shift shaft clockwise. I decieded to take a part a parts motor of mine and put that shift shaft in the lower unit to try to line things up correctly by instructions. Well... When I put the shift shaft in the lower unit I am trying to install, all it does is spin, no mater how far in it is. When the shift shaft is removed from the lower unit, does this creat a problem internally? Any ideas on how to remove the shift shaft that is stuck in the upper part of the motor? Thanks for any help (see picture to understand). Steve
