Shift shaft question

Working on an 1983 mercruiser, alpha drive. Don't have the serial number in front of me but,the shift shaft that goes through the exhaust bellow is loose in the bushings. The bushings were replaced last year, and the shaft measures 3/8 all the way down. Did they change the diamater of the shaft at some point to fit the new bushings? Or did someone install the wrong bushing? The bushing measures @ .390, the shaft .375? The probem is there is to much slop to adjust the shift even with the new cable adjusted @ 6"
Thanks for any info

Re: Shift shaft question

Do you mean the lower shift shaft the brass one with the shoe shape on top? if so its it's very loose in the bushings I wondered the same thing when I worked on my drive when you say slop do you mean going into forward and reverse or just reverse?

Re: Shift shaft question

Nope, the upper one that connects to the shift cable slide. It's loose in the bushings that it goes through.

Re: Shift shaft question

Well the lower is wiggly, the seal on the upper is in,and good. Also,I have the bushings you showed me, the shaft is loose in the new set also. The shaft calipers out 3/8 perfectly. I checked the shaft compared to my personal one,it measures exactly 3/8 same as mine. However the customers shaft is tight when installed into my bell but not on his. I'm thinking the bushings are mfd wrong. Even a new set we have on the shelf does not fit correctly, quicksilver brand too. Dunno what the heck is going on.
What happened us another shop installed bellows, shift cable, and gimbal bearing. The guy was out on lake superior, shift failed, had to run 4 miles in reverse to get back,as the kicker they fixed failed also. Could have been a bad situation. The lower slide set screw fell out causing the shift problem. I got it together, but the shift was problematic getting set, thus finding the shift shaft issue. I got it going today but had to extend the slot in the lever a bit to get enough travel, could also be the l-unit is wore a bit also, shift dogs and such. I explained it all to the customer that it'll need to be done up better, and correctly,or it'll probably fail again. All I could tell him is I did what I could to save his vacation, all settings are right from the mercruiser manual, except the slot was extended a bit. Whew! Enough typing,
