shift shaft removal

1990 25hp johnson short shaft.

got the lower unit seperated from the exhaust housing, but i cant remove it completely because of the shift shaft. how do i disconnect it from the shift mechanism at the powerhead?
I removed the water intake screen and disconnected the nuts there, but because of the flange i cant remove the male end.

move one of the nuts away from the other and remove plastic keeper.Note its a good idea to install a new plastic keeper on reassembly.
