shift shaft replace

i intend in replacing the shift shaft and all seals and bushing on my alpha 1 unit. my question is will the shift crank stay in place while i remove and replace the shift shaft. thanks for your help. john

It might/should stay in place. set the drive so that the prop shaft is vertical when removing and installing the shift shaft. Gravity will keep it in fwd gear

just to make sure i understand its like having the prop facing upwards so the prop shaft is verticle. thanks. john

thanks for the info. i was succesful in replacing shift shaft. your response gave me the guts to do it.
