Shift Shaft replacement Issue

Need some advice.

I have a 1989 Yamaha 150 Pro V where the shift shaft has broken wear it goes into the lower unit. The gear assembly in the lower unit seems to funciton fine when I pulled the lower unit off to inspect where my problem was located. I have read where replacing this shaft requires removing the power head which is above my experience and willingness to attempt.

I have decided to take it to a local boat mechanic that seems resonable but here is my question. When removing this much off the motor, what else should I have him replace / check so I do not have to revisit pulling the power head off in the future. Is there any major / minor things to check with out asking him to "replace what is neededrecommended"? I just wnat to be thorough and not stupid.

thanks for you help.

Re: Shift Shaft replacement Issue

I wondered what your quote was to replace the shift shaft. I have the same issue with a 1991 250hp Yamaha.

Re: Shift Shaft replacement Issue

It was about 500 labor and 150 for the shift shaft itself. I have not got the boat back yet though. Its that time of year where you can't find a place that is not busy. Good luck.
