What is the purpose of this rubber sleeve.?
I'm asking about Item C in this diagram:

It's kind of like a dust seal, but for underwater use. It helps keep debris from collecting on top of the shaft seals, which extends their life.

OK. Thanks.! That's what I was guessing...
I had already gone ahead and ordered it to go along with my reseal effort.
During disassembly, I didn't notice that it was missing from my shift shaft.
And unfortunately (surprisingly), it does not come with P/N-815921A21.
