shift shaft troubles

I have a 88 BassTracker and just took it a part to replace carpet and it has panels down the sides that a revited on so I took them off witch means I had to take the shifer off but cant remember if it went in front of the panel or behind the panel, I tried both ways and they both looked wrong to me, but not sure so if any one could help it would be greatly appreciated thanks

The shifter mechanisim is behind the panel and the shifter and hold down part(s) usually screw on from the outside. Then a cover is used to hide the screws and the shifter is installed with one screw. Hope this helps.

Thanks that helps alot, it had revits in it to hold the shifter mechanism in place is it okay if I use stainless steel screws to replace the revits.
