My shift shaft appears to have swapped sides. My shift arm in the bellhousing is supposed to turn the shift shaft towards port but my shift shaft wants to turn toward starboard

I may have just found a problem. The clip that goes in the groove on the shift shaft is gone.

Update from 20 minutes ago. Took the shift rod seal off found the clip had slid down the rod. Cleaned everything up put clip back into the groove and turned the shift rod back one tooth and now everything lines and locks up CCW in forward gear like it is supposed to. There is no telling how long the clip has been out of the groove but I think when I was changing out the driveshaft seal and doing the water pump I must have moved rod up and over a tooth. Thanks to everyone with info on what to check for and how to check. Appears I am on the road to recovery now, thanks again.

That’s great was struggling to see how if you don’t remove it how it got messed up on a gen 2 …Did not know it can be clocked differently, assumed it was only in one way…

ok yes as long as the roller stays in the shift cable end ( grease will hold it)you should be in business.

Yeah…..Alldodge called it earlier in the post….I don’t know if the previous owner had something to do with it or not because it was shifting fine before I removed the drive previous times. Going to do the install today and all should go well.

One thing that may come up and spook me is when I installed the drive the first time when the shift cradle was off I had to sort of force the remote shifter back to neutral which may or may not have messed up my shift cable somehow. I may to to do some adjusting on the cable. I will report back possibly tomorrow or Friday.

As I was suspecting…..with the engine running it goes into forward gear just barely before the detent…… will not shift into reverse at all
Which way should I adjust the barrel nut or should I adjust the slot?

Disconnect and remove lower shift cable. Start motor and move cable in/out and find the center spot for neutral. Adjust barrel so cable just reconnects.
