When i throw my shifter into foward it
accelerates,but the propeller doesn't turn
if i give it a couple of slow tries it
works, reverse always works fine though.
also it idles out on neutral, the only way I can stop it from idleing out is raise the warm up lever next to the shifter.
any help would be greatly appriciated.

Re: shifter and idle out on johnson 73

Sounds like you may have 1 or 2 problems, mamajuana.

Shift linkage out of adjustment. Pull the engine cover. Engine not running, look for the shifter linkage. As you move your control from Neutral to Forward you should see the linkage move a shaft that goes down into the lower unit. Same with Neutral to Reverse, except the opposite direction. If the linkage is correctly set (equal distance travel to Forward and to Reverse), you may have a more serious problem in the controller or lower end.

I think you mean that the engine dies when you say it "idles out". If that is what you mean, the idle adjustment(s) may be out. Adjusting that is more complex.

Finally: With both of the variables controlled from your controller exhibiting problems with adjustments at the same time you may have a controller or control cable problem. I suggest taking it to a pro.

Good Luck.

More-n-likely it's a blown hub on prop.
Remove prop and send it to a prop shop to get it "re-hubbed" Also, any marina should be able to have this done for you, but most send them out to a prop shop anyhoo.

Check shear pin too, (if so equipped).
Also, consider buying a sapre prop and shear pin and keep it in the bilge (just in case it does it again). My Force blows hubs like once a season.

------------------
I'm no expert, but I DID sleep at a Holiday Inn last night!

Howdy, 12footer. Is it likely that reverse would work well with a blown hub or shear pin? Possible, I agree.

mamajuana, you ought to go buy a shop manual, either from OMC or Clymer and read up on adjusting shift linkage and idle speed. Also, don't neglect 12footer's advice about checking the prop. I don't think it is likely to be the problem, but it is possible and checking it is easy.

Good Luck.
JB

You were right cormbwell it was the linkage
cable the one for the gears to be more precise. The new cables worked so well that I
have decided to change the (pardon me if I
dont use the correct mechanical terminoligy)
accelliration cable as well. Thank you
for your help.
