shifter cable problem

I have a 85 wellcraft with a 5.7 mercruiser with alpha 1 out drive I have replaced the lower shift cable and it fixed the shifting problem for about one or two times on the water. Know it is doing it again. It will stick in forward and reverse you have to rock the throttle a couple times to get it to disengage and go back to neutral. So I guess replace the cable that goes to the throttle control next or is their something I am missing. Every thing I have read is when the throttle is sticking like that replace the lower cable. But I know the top cable could stretch also.

Re: shifter cable problem

If the lower shift cable is stiff or sticking, it will kill the engine when you shift into or out of gear. If that isn't happening, and its just stiff coming out of or going into gear without stalling, then it could be the upper cable.
If it only sticks coming out of hear, the cables could be improperly adjusted and not allowing the shift interrupt switch to do its job, or the switch itself could be bad. or a bad connection.

It is not stiff going into or out of gear when you go to neutral it is still stuck in gear. if you are in forward and go to neutral you have to go past neutral a tad towards reverse to get neutral and the same thing when you are in reverse you have to go towards forward to get it out of gear.

Re: shifter cable problem

The upper cable (Between helm and engine) either has too much free travel in it from being worn out, or the shifter itself has so much slop in it that it can't move the drive enough. Could also be the shift spool inside the drive is worn out. There is a section in the service manual in the troubleshooting section that covers the play in the shift spool and shows how to check it.

Re: shifter cable problem

I was just looking at the service manual #6 online I see a couple things to check tom. and see what happens. Also I need to really order the number 6 manual but which manual for the motor do I order since 6 rally only handles the out drives. also until I get one can I use a manual for the motor some were online.
Thanks
