shifter controls problem

I've got a 1988 25 hp evinrude outboard, and lately when I start it up - with the handle in neutral - the propeller engages. I actually have the controls in neutral, but the boat put-puts around in the water. I need to adjust the cable so that when I start it up, the thing actually stays in neutral. I don't want to take the control box apart - last time I did that it took forever to get it back together. Any tips for adjust the cables at the motor end?

Thanks a bunch,
Mike

Re: shifter controls problem

Not adjustable in the control box anyway. Just unhook the shifter cable at the motor and put the shiffter in neutral. On the control box and on the motor. When the motor is in neutral the prop will turn in both directions. Then spin the adjuster on the cable until it fits loosley over the motor shifter. Done.
