I just picked up a " project boat " 1983 sea ray 26' with a 350. I think the driveis an MR or Alpha but its possible its an r or pre alpha. Reverse is not engaging from the shifter but I can engage it manually by giving a push on the outdrive shift dog. Whats the best way to isolate a a cable issue versus an internal drive wear issue.

--How many degrees should the shift dog turn to actuate ?
--What's the best way to check and or adjust the cable ?
-- What's the easiest way to tell an Alpha from a Pre alpha
--Other related info?

Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,.... All that is up in Don'S Adults Only section,.....

My guess is, it needs a new lower shift cable,......
