Shifter on 2003 searay

Im not sure if im in the right forum for this but in middle of summer my shifter no longer locks into Neutral, I can move it by hand without pushing the button..It came with the power tilt switch. Going from reverse or forward it just wont lock into place anymore so I know something in there is busted. Sugestions? boat is 2003 searay 240 sundeck 5.0 mpi engine 260hp with bravo 3.

There isnt any model # around..I'll have to take off 6 bolts to pull it. When I push round button to warm up it moves fine, it The othertimes that it moves freely...Hard to explain

My guess is there is an interlock of some kind that you have to engauge when you press the lever to shift and to me it sounds like its stuck in the engauged posiiton.

On my power miter saw it has a safrty like that and afte rthe machine fell off the table the safty got slammed in the on position. Now you can press the trigger and run the say since the safety switch is STUCK in the on position. I have a feeling the same thing has happend in your throttle control.

At least you can shift the handle and drive the boat imagine if you got locked out and were stuck out on the water because of it!

Thats what Im hoping...Thats its not busted but im gonna try to get that pic on here hope this works.Also if anyone knows or suggests..I change the fluids religiously every year..Should I be replacing anything else...from a new 2003?..Inline fuel filter?...WOW..It worked!!

It's called the Commander 4000 Gen ll Pistol Grip Panel/Side Mount Remote Control and the PN for the control is 883709A02.
There is a lockout mechanism in the handle, but according to the Merc parts catalog, it's not sold seperately, and it doesn't show any repairs for it in the service manual.
Here is an exploded view from the manual. No details about it in the manual either.

Thanks Don..So its either live with it..Or buy a whole new one I guess. Do you know which # corresponds to the lockout mechanism?

I know you can get the handle assembly (what is circled and #1) from Merc, for about $115. The mechanism consists of the parts that are held on by screws #11. Never had one apart, so can't give you much info on how it works or what things do.
