shifter position on 50hp merc

I just replaced the shifter cable on a 99 50hp merc.Just to maake sure I got it right, does the control box when shifting into forward move the shifter on the motor toward the front of the motor or toward the rear of the motor? Thanks for the help.<br />DWB in Atoka
