Shifting Control box

I just got a 71 merc 115 inline 6. The shifting box is messed up. Every time I try to put it in reverse it gets stuck. Works fine from forward to Neutral.
Can I put a new box on this or does it have to be merc controller?

Could be as simple as a broken Holder, this is a half round piece of plastic that holds the lever in neutral. Remove your control box and you should see a bolt that holds the lever on the control box, remove the bolt and the lever should come off the other side. The "holder" is attached with two phillips screws. If the holder is broken (which is a common problem with these) a piece of this is causing the lever to stick. You can purchase this at your local dealer under $10 and install it yourself. Quicksilver part #16899
