Shifting issue with Johnson Evinrude 40 HP 70s

My gear cable slipped from the hand lever. After putting it back together, changing gear became so hard. Even changing gear (forward/Neutral/Bakward) by hand from the motor requires tons of push.
I would appreciate if someone could tell me what could be wrong.
Thanks

I tried it both ways. With cable hooked to the lever and unhooked from the lever. Same result.
I just did lower unit oil change this morning. I have not tried it yet.
The last time I did a mistake while I did the oil change. I unscrewed the wrong screw to drain the lower unit.

If you removed the Phillips head screw, did you get it back in the hole in the shift yoke? If not, that's your problem.

Well I took it the the shop and my friend just moved the adjustment by the throttle that says fast /slow and the shifting became sweet! I was told it was a lock feature. Anyway it still didn't cost a dime. After putting it the water and went past the buoy it started running rough. So 180 back to the ramp while almost cursing at it for ruining my weekend's and son's fishing expectations.
