shifting prblem 112 evinrude 1996

I just bought a 1996 112hp evinrude rebuilt ...new pistons, rings,water pump, carbs rebuilt ,oil injection removed.. Problem is when I went to leave a little island we go to the motor would not shift in to netrual so I could start the motor. the shifter would not move... I belive its in the shift linkage on the motor or perhaps in the foot ...cables are less then year old but the control box looks original / boat is a 1985 sport-craft fisherman center consol...I am new to the bigger boats & motors ...I tried ajust the black wheels end of cables going to the engine shift linkage was able to give it a little play & perhaps shift it in to forward on the powewr head was very hard though... Please any info would be very helpfull thanks... Howard I looked to see they only made this motor in 1995 & 96. the motor ran awesome untill it would not shift & was not able to start motor ...

Take the shift cable off of the linkage at the motor and try to shift it by hand using the linkage at the motor. If this works then you know its in the cables and/or the control box.

If you can't shift it at the motor then the shift linkage/ rod may be binding or you have another issue in the gearcase.

If it shifts at the motor, then move your throttle handle with the cables disconnected and see how the cable moves. If its still binding my bet would be something loose in the linkage inside the control box.

Thank you for ur response .. I will try this asap .. im offshore on the rig right now . so monday when i get in I will giver her a try & hope it will be just in the old control box ....

I got the motor to run ...there was a very slight bend in both cables close to to the engine ...My seat feel back when i was tilting the motor up to land on an island ...straghtin the cables out best i could & took apart the top side throttle control shifter made sure every thing looked good & was lubed ...put it back to gether & got it to fire up ...VERY stiff throttle control shifter tho..1985 ..cables one year old ...found another shifter just like the one I have for 120 bucks should have it in a week ...Motor runs like a champ ....
