Shifting Prob, 1960 75HP

Just got boat with 1960 75HP Evinrude (50522). Engine runs great, but pops out of gear, both fwd and reverse. Disassembled lower end, and clutch dog "ears" are chipped. Could this cause the problem? Can the ears be built up with brass or silver solder, and remachined? (We have access to a mill). I did a search before this post, hoping to find the answer. Please help, the fish are waiting.

Certainly, that is the problem if they are worn. And it takes surprisingly little wear to make it jump. The dog is only half the story. Don't ignore the gear--if the contact area in them are worn it will jump too. Finally, putting a good dog against a worn gear is folly. It will wear out the new dog in short order.

People have tried re-machining the parts with limited sucess. Problem is you are removing the hard surface and it won't last very long.

So, my choices are: a used/rebuilt lower; new parts (about $600); or junk it. The used unit may have probs. Rebuilt probably pricey. New parts cost more than the boat and motor. And I don't want to junk it, as it runs really well. Damn! Or I could go ahead and try to refurbish the gears.
