Re: Shifting problem, need some help please!

id rip into the tach and see what setting its at i think setting 1 is for 2 stroke, 2 is for 4 cyl, 3 for 6cyl, 4 8cyl. if its set at the wrong setting like mine was when i bought my boat it wont be accurate took out 8, 10 screws for the dash and put it on the right setting. most likely if you dont think your motor is running that high that is your problem if it really is you've got a fuel/carb problem i have a 5.8l and i can tell the differnce between 500 and 1k rpm idle.

i agree, shoot if I had that kinda displacement, I could too!

I think Im going to do the following.

1 Time the thing with a light!
2. rebuild the card
3. PRAY that once the carb is rebuilt, it will solve the idling problem
4. HOPE that getting the idle down solves the shifting problem

Most likely this is not going to work. but just in case, but can anyone answer this question for me PLEASE...

Judging by the test above, are the switches good?

thanks

ok so, rebuilt the carb, still idling the same.

Hooked up a shop tach, and boat tack is +100, meaning at best, lowest idle with the motor running smooth is around 800-850

Spec calls for 500-600, after reading a lot on here, the going opinion is for between 750-850 for idle. Im so confused!

Checked timing, ~4 degrees btdc

I get split opinions on the ESA. Some say when manually activated you will hear a drop in idle, some say it is far to fast and unnoticeable.

I really don't mind replacing the switch, but I want to know that I'm not replacing a good switch. I mean going by the Ohms test, the switch is activating properly.

Could I not test the wire going to the ignition coil for a ground when activated? Ive read that when the ESA is engaged, it grounds out the ignition coil... so would that not be the best place to start if the switches test good?

Can someone PLEASE help me figure this out!!! I really want the "2 finger" shifting everyone says cobras are great for.

Anyone have any information on testing the actual module itself
