Shifting problem ?

my 82' evinrude 70 hp was stalling out under a load, while doing the decarb thing ( which work great), the engine was still stalling. I tried ( for some reason ) to adjust the shift cable. I now can not get it back into neutral or reverse. It goes into forward with no problem. Any suggestion how to readjust it? It seems like it is in the control box itself.

Thanks Deuce

Back up. Where did you adjust it from? I would start there. The "throw" on the shift linkage is short. Remove your motor cover and watch the linkage move. Yes, you probably have it out of adjustment but to "re-center" it is not too involved.

Bob

Bob,
I started inside the motor and turned the screw. I readjusted it back to where I thought it was but then it just won't return to neutral. It almost seems as though the control box is jammed.Help!
Thanks
Deuce

Re: Shifting problem ?

There is a screw on the cable that goes to the throw on the piston it is adjustment screw. When you put it in gear the piston goes forward, when you bring it back to neutral/reverse it throws the piston back to the shift linkage.
Thanks
Deuce

OK. The trunion nut is on the cable. If that is what you moved, just remove the cable from the anchor slot, put the motor and shifter in neutral and adjust the nut so it slips back in the anchor slot. Thats what Bob was refering to recentering.

While you have the cable off the motor, move the shift handle back and forth. It should move very freely. Once reconnected, if the motor is off, you will have to spin the prop as you try to shift it.

Good luck!
