I have been having some problems with shifting. The motor will not even go into reverse at all and is hard to put into forward. It is a tiller motor and it has to be in forward now to start. How do I fix this?

thanks
longshot

Re: shifting problem

OK longshot.Maybe we can get somewhere.Did this problem occur suddenly, slowly,or after some repair work?
Your shift handle is in front of the engine. It has a rod that goes under the cowl to a bellcrank. The bellcrank rotates a shaft, the shaft moves a shift rod up and down.
While I cannot give you a direct answer, check the linkage out.Somewhere along this route there maybe an adjustment.
Also starting in forward is interesting.Electric start motors usually won't crank in forward, manual start wont pull over in forward. This is why I feel the problem is in the shift linkage.
DHP

Re: shifting problem

I agree with the shift linkage being the culprit. If she starts in forward, something is wrong. It may as simple a fix as an adjustment.
Stalker

Re: shifting problem

Yes, it is not supposed to start in forward. The problem seems to come and go. The hard shifting came after I hit a stump last weekend. The weird thing is that it will sometimes go back to shifting correctly. I am at a loss. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas on the problem.

longshot
