OK guys I just bought a 92 Fourwinns 180 freedom, 4.3 OMC I/0 Cobra drive. I am a new boater, but mechanically inclined. The place which I had bought it from claims to have replace the shift cables, new clutch, gears and seals. Test drove the boat at the marina and everything was fine. When I launched it this weekend I had a bunch of problems:

1.) Shift lever was really hard to operate at time, it seamed really stiff around nuetral, I would have to to put alot of force on it to move it.

2.) Reverse was hit or miss, sometimes I would shift into reverse and would still be in drive.

3.) After several tries, it sounded like it caught reverse but the engine would just bog down and die.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, not sure if the cables are just not adjusted properly or what. I tried reading thru my Seloc manual but came up with no solutions or where I can adjust these cables.

Thanks

Re: Shifting problems

Well if was shifting well with the new cable before than the only other thing would be the linkages back on the motor need lubed up, may be a little sticky from sitting? Maybe lube the control box too.

Re: Shifting problems

I'm with Bondo, take it back to them and let them work on it since they haven't got it adjusted right.
Sounds like it will shift ok out of the water, but not in the water. So there may be issues with the esa system or the adjustment of the cables.

Thanks guys, was hoping for somewhat of an easy fix seeing that the dealer is 1 1/2hrs away, just trying to avoid that hassle

Ayuh,......

Unfortunately,....... It's a reasonably involved process,+ a Manual is pretty much a Necessity,.....
You bought an OMC,......
And those resorces aren't available on line,+ Folks who can explain it on a forum a even fewer,+ farther between.......

If it was a Mercruiser,.......
I could show you Pictures,....... And the Manual probably........

Good Luck..... Maybe 1 of the OMC Experts will see this,+ stop by.......
