Hey everyone, I need some help. Yesterday I put my 1991 four winns 3.0L HO sterndrive omc cobra in the water and it would not start. After troubleshooting for a while I realized that it was because the shifter was not completely in neutral. I had to jiggle it like crazy to get it into neutral. It finally started but was very difficult to shift into forward or reverse. I believed that it probably was the shifter box or maybe corrosion on the shifter cable. However, when I took the boat out of the water to flush the engine, there was a loud clicking sound coming from the bottom of the outdrive. Are these two things correlated? Could it be a bad shift shaft in the outdrive? Please help, I would like to go boating a few more times before the season is over. Thanks to all>

Re: Shifting problems.

You have to start at the beginning, there is no easy answer. First identify why it's stiff and not returning to neutral. Google "OMC Hastings" the information there will walk you through the troubleshooting to zero in on what's wrong
