Re: Shifting problems

I have now looked closer and found that above the gear casing n the back there is a void where a rod comes up from the gear casing and another one bent at a 90 degree comes down from the power head aren't connected which looks like my problem I can move the lower one changing gears can anyone tell me how they are connected and what the part is called thanks

Re: Shifting problems

Before you tear the gear case apart check the simple things. Does the little coupler on the lower leg still have the pin in it? The linkage is packed pretty tight in there, and can be difficult to see missing nuts/parts. Get a flashlight and a buddy, have buddy shift the boat into all gears while you watch the linkage move. If you drop the lower, is the shiftrod spinning freely like its not connected? It could be a 2 piece that someone spun out too far?

Re: Shifting problems

Ya the pin is missing but in my manual I can't find where it says what the connector is called to connect the lower shaft to the upper shaft so I can try and locate one

Re: Shifting problems

It's called a gear shift rod coupler Part#F85704
.It also needs a small pin F85372
and a F85704 cotter pin.
New about $28-30.
Post a pic of your set-up.You might not need it all.J

Re: Shifting problems

There should be a metal round extension that fits over the shift rod that is bent 90.It will have a hole that fits over the other rod coming out of lower unit. On the sides of the metal extension right where it fits over the lower rod there is a smaller hole. That is where your pin needs to go. This hold the two together. Hope this made sense.

Re: Shifting problems

Where would i get that sleeve????What can i do if my 1989 85hp Force has no scag? Also i believe i am missing some kind of sleeve, the motor will not shift into forward and reverse.. looking at motor i see shift rod that has a 90 degree angle moves up and down when i shift, yet another rod with a cotter pin through it that when pushed or pulled stops prop from spinning.. thus i believe its some kind of sleeve that connects the two rods.. motor runs very good considering its been sitting for 3 years... Any advise would be great, i am new to this site.. Thanks
