Did you ever shift into Reverse forcefully without the engine running or anyone turning the prop when it occurred? If so you dinged your shift linkage somewhere. F and R in the lower unit are connected by a shift dog which is positioned as a function of the shifter shaft "radial" position. To go from F to R or R to F you have to go through N as the clutch dog has to slide along the prop shaft to move from the forward part of the LU to the aft part or vise versa.

Disconnect the remote cable and with a helper (to spin the prop) engine off, throttle at idle slide the engine shift cam lever through the gears remembering it shouldn't want to go all the way into R until the assistant has rotated the prop to the point that the cogs and slots on the rear of the R gear line up and engage. If all that works smoothly, trouble shoot your cables....possibly a kink currently or previously which is impossible to correct once kinked (opinion). Possibly the control box had a spool-spindle-sleeve-bearing-cotter pin-a cast part broken type problem.

Thanks Texasmark .. I did shift it with motor off goes in F no problem then back to N no problem then R and yes you need to turn prop to fully engage . start motor in N go to F then try to go to N and it goes in R . I will take a better look at the cables tomorrow .I did do a quick look at the cables but could not see anything bad .
Been around boats a long time , had this toon for 3yrs and did a carb rebuild and tune up with a new water pump 2yrs ago . But this is my first OB

LOL while typing this I had an Idea. This started the other day when I was putting it back on the lift ( has the uprights not the toon lift ) maybe that lift grabbed the cable . But it does shift fine with shifter as long as the motor is not running Thanks again

up date just got toon on a trailer , and with muffs on it it's shifting fine. put it back in lake and it won't shift to N when running the prop under a load.. Anyone know what the end play is for the prop shaft ??? seams like it's putting the shift fork in a load and is hard to shift and when it come's out of gear it jumps to the other gear . I'm sorry it's an 04 not a 02

Bit of a problem but get a helper and remove the remote shift cable at the engine. Go out and run the toon as you are currently doing and have your helper or let them drive and you do it, shift and see if it works under load. If it does, chase your remote control box. If it doesn't drain your lower unit oil and tell us what comes out including any water, oil color....deep blue-black, or yellow or brown tint. Will be some bubbles since you have been running it. Might put the oil in a clear glass or plastic container that is small and tall to get some height to the oil. After a day or two, if it has water in it the water will start settling to the bottom and you will see it as bubbles also....once the air bubbles from agitation have dispersed. If it has a magnet on the drain plug, the amount of metal deposits clinging to that too.
