I am having a hard time shifting my 88 special evinrude into gear. What are some possible scenarios? Also, after it shifts into gear I can hear it shift and then it will make another noise like it is shifting into gear again, I dont really know what it is. Any ideas?

Re: Shifting problems

Try removing the shift cable and shift it manually. If it don't do it any more, check the cable for free movement and such.

If it still acts up shifting manually, check the gear lube for anything that shouldn't be there.

OBJ....I am new to this so go slow. What do you mean by shifting manually? And by gear lube do you mean lower unit? Thank you in advance for your patience and help.

Re: Shifting problems

Hey Mike, I believe OBJ is referring to manually shifting the linkage on the motor where the shift cable hooks up, this will determine if its a cable problem or something else. By gear lube he does mean lower unit. Drain the lube and look for water or metal pieces. Also I got the letter you sent.

Yep...what dd said. What you want to do is determine if the cause is at the motor or the Control Box/Cable system.
