Shifting winding down noise

Hello, ever since I got my 83 Mercury 50hp I have noticed that when I shift it from just regular idle to either forward or reverse it gets this winding down type of sound like gears attempting to catch maybe and then it finally catches and gets into gear. I am wondering if this is normal or if something needs to be adjusted. I am not sure what could be causing it but all other outboards I have seen shifting into gear make little to no noise. The PO said he changed the impeller and gear oil recently so that should be ok. Also I am looking to rebuild my carbs and wondering how I tell which brand carbs I have, I have noticed that there are two different brands on all the parts diagrams I look at. Thank you!

when you shift ? are you easing it into gear or using quick swift movement? also did PO have this issue ?? if so gears could be going

Re: Shifting winding down noise

I am trying to change gears as fast as possible but the control box is a little stiff. I tried to lube the cable ends but the cable itself looks a little rused and maybe a tad long. When the PO showed me it running I do not remember hearing that noise as he shifted into gear, and he did have a different control box than what he gave me as the one he had was made for the boat. Not sure what to do about it.

might want to check to see if c.box is suited for motor, also might check box internals for condition, and relube cams
