Good day all,

Last night I replaced the gimbal bearing on my boat, its a 1990 Rinker Captiva 185 with a 4.3L mercruiser alpha 1 gen 1. The bearing install went well other that it being a PITA to remove. Here lies the problem, the stern drive slipped out of gear during re-assembly. Is there a way to align the sliding gear assembly without having to remove the leg again?

Nope.

Pull the drive, redo the upper to lower. Heck, pulling the drive is a 10 minute job. Not worth worrying about. It is loads safer to assemble upper and lower off the boat than to try and lift the lower up to the upper and keep everything in gear.

He replaced the gimbal bearing, so the whole drive had to have been removed....

If the drive slipped out of gear and you tightened up the nuts on the bell housing, then you bent the intermediate and lower shift shafts. Pull the drive, then the shafts and either repair or replace...

when you say pull the drive and inspect/replace the shafts. what thats are you talking about? the shafts within the stern drive or the drive shaft from the engine?

Shift shafts... Upper is in the bell housing, intermediate is in the top housing of the drive, lower is in the bottom housing of the drive...

Hi

You may want to see if a piece of stock the same dia as the tip of that alignment bar fits /// Pretty sure its 1.00 // their is a print in the stickies // Check your bar as well to ensure its in spec.

I have had good luck "Roughing in the alignment" with a 1.00 shaft as it allows you to see which way to move the engine and also runout which is often present on used couplers. ( or atleast the ones I have worked on. )

Did you split the drive? If No, do you mean the shift slide where it goes into the gimbal ? If you forced it on, you bent the shift shafts

I’ll find out today the damage when I pull the leg off again, hopefully this can be repaired easily and parts readily available. Sadly everything is closed today and tomorrow as it is a holiday in Canada!

So I pulled the leg off, NO DAMAGE! None of the shift shafts were damaged. I replaced the gasket, reassembled, and VOILA it all worked, I needed to re-adjust the shft linkage for reverse by 2 turns but other than that it went greaet.
