Hi!

I was curious, I jut purchased a 2000 Four Winns boat and on the captain side there's a rectangular portion on the fiberglass that's shinier then the rest. I asked the previous owner and was told he has no clue, maybe from a previous compound..

Also, on the inside of the boat the upholstery seems loose, looks like the fiberglass has been repaired, any suggestions?

Thx

Can you get some pictures?

It could be where a previous registration decal or something was at one time.

It could be a repaired area.

How big is the rectangle?

I would bet it was a repair (probably not of the same size), and those are the masking lines that the sorry-*** finisher didn't fair back in when the boat was shipped...

That has all of the looks of being speared by another boat.

Looks like gel coat repair. Check the inside for signs of repair. Previous owner should have knowledge of it, unless its just a poor fix from the factory.

I agree that its a repair. Suprised whoever did the work didnt try to feather those masking lines out more though.

I asked the previous owner who told me he got the boat compounded a few years back and the boat came back with that spot afterward.

I have also noticed some bolts missing on the upholstery's screws on the inside of the repaired section. Thus confirming your replies, I'm not necessarily disappointed at the shiny spot as it is a 2000 model after all, i'm just disappointed that this information was not provided to me when I inquired, makes me feel :(

Thanks all for your replies,
Samy

The original post did not say that the previous owner has owned the boat since new. It it possible that the previous owner was not the owner when the damage happened.

I've got one slightly duller than the rest of the boat.... coincidentally about the same size... but you have to strain to notice it and someone has to point it out. Same size/height/location.

Surveyor said it was probably from a repair. Said at that height and location it is fairly common as a spot for damage. I think yours is from getting hit, too.

previous owner purchased boat new, claims it came back with shiny spot after compound, was not aware until lately.

Kind of an awkward situation as seller seems like an honest person

Could also be a spot where a sticker once was (maybe a name decal?). I have a spot on the back of my boat where we removed the boat name put on with those ugly mailbox lettering stickers (the rectangular ones, side-by-side) that makes a very similarly shaped shiny spot against the slightly less shiny surrounding gelcoat. I've tried waxing it out multiple times, but without something more aggressive, the outline is still clearly visible.

You can sort of see it just under the hull seem above the outdrive here:
